What the standard actually says
The AKC standard for the Lapponian Herder gives an adult weight of 31.8 kg and a height of 46–51 cm (18–20 in) at the shoulder. It is one figure rather than a range, which is how the standard is written for this breed — most often as a limit not to be exceeded. Individual dogs still sit either side of it, and a kilogram of difference is not a fault.
Calories follow weight, but not in a straight line. Energy need scales with bodyweight to the power of 0.75, not to the power of one. A Lapponian Herder that is 20% heavier than the standard does not need 20% more food — it needs about 15% more. The same arithmetic runs the other way: trimming a bowl by eye takes off less than the owner thinks.
Neutering matters more than most owners expect. The same Lapponian Herder needs about 1,687 kcal intact and 1,500 kcal neutered — roughly 11% less. Feeding the old amount after the operation is one of the commonest routes to a slowly overweight dog.
