How the German scale works

The German scale runs backwards: 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 is the lowest pass. A German 1.3 is an excellent degree, not a failing one. German universities also apply the modified Bavarian formula when converting inbound grades, which is a different calculation again.

In practice the scale runs from 1.00 to 5.00 with 7 named bands. The best is sehr gut (very good) (1.00 to 1.50), and the lowest passing grade is ausreichend (sufficient) at 4.00. Anything past that is a fail, whatever the number looks like to a US reader. Because the scale is inverted, 1.00 is the top mark — a figure that would be an F if it were read as a US GPA.

The reason a single conversion number does not exist is that the two systems measure different things. A US GPA is an average of course grades on a scale where the top is routinely awarded. Most national scales reserve their top band for a small fraction of students, so mapping the numbers proportionally compresses a whole cohort into the bottom half of the 4.0 range. Band mapping — what this page does — avoids that, but every evaluator draws the bands slightly differently.
